The
Mountain Club of South Africa was founded in 1891 and at
present consists of 13 sections throughout Southern Africa.
Membership holds many privileges and is certainly sought
after by persons who have a love of adventure and appreciation
of the natural environment. We are sure that you will find
the Mountain Club interesting with much excitement to be
found in its activities. Ask lots of questions. Join in
our activities as they suit you, organise your equipment
so that you are comfortable without carrying too heavily,
set aside enough time for walking or climbing and suddenly
you have access to a new life style. |
Entertainment
We normally meet on Thursday evenings, at 7.30 for 8
pm, at the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club in Conyngham
Road (50 m from Cape Rd, on the right), Port Elizabeth.
The next weekend's outings are finalised at the meetings.
Our Thursday evening entertainments are generally of a
very high standard and are highly recommended. The entertainment
sheet will advise you what is happening every week. Tea
and coffee at a small fee are available to round off the
evening.
Rock
Climbing
Steep ground security courses are held regularly; we
recommend the attendance of these to learn and maintain
the basics of rope safety. Rock climbing meets also appear
on the meet sheet. A well-equipped introductory Rock Climbing
School is run by members. Consult the rock-climbing convenor
for more information.
Meetings
This section is active in the mountains virtually every
weekend of the year. Our activities range from easy day
walks through to moderate and strenuous multi-day climbs.
A certain level of fitness is necessary to participate
in each of these activities. If you are uncertain as to
your ability start with an easy day walk and progress
from there.
Properties
The Section has several beautiful properties; please
speak to the Hut Warden for access arrangements and permits.
We also have access to properties and huts owned by other
sections of the MCSA throughout South Africa , as well
as mountain chalets and huts in many parts of the world
through the UIAA (International Mountaineering Union).
Requirements
and procedure
Once you have attended three meets you are eligible to
apply to join this Section of the Mountain Club. Approach
the Administrator or Secretary for an application form
and further instructions.
Equipment
As in most sports today much of the equipment available
is hi-tech and expensive. However, starting with the basics
presents no problem and as one gains in experience so
one can add what is needed for specific outings; it is
possible to be suitably equipped at low cost. All participants
are expected to be self sufficient for the meets they
attend. Should you need advice the experienced members
will be only too happy to point out what is generally
needed.

How
to join meets
In order to participate in meets you will need to place
your name on the attendance list by the Thursday evening
prior to the outing. You can also contact the leader beforehand.
Some meets may have number restrictions and it is recommended
that you put your name down as soon as feasible for these
meets. If you cannot attend any meet for which you have
put your name down, it is essential that you advise the
leader as soon as possible.
